The well was created in 1766 on the site of the earlier well in the Zopf style.
Originally it was closed with window-like openings and covered with shutters. It was rebuilt in Classicist style between 1818 and 1824. One of the flagship projects of the Institute of Advanced Studies (iASK) is the Sounding City project where Kőszeg, and specifically the town’s well, plays a key role. Within the framework of this research project, iASK researchers developed the concept of Sounding City. The glockenspiel is world famous as it is possible to play it in different ways. In parallel with the project, Kőszeg’s Municipality had the well on Jurisics Square refurbished and has plans to turn it into a Sounding City Well in line with iASK’s plans.
The glockenspiel is controlled by a computer (MIDI). It is possible to play pre-recorded music, but with the use of different software it is also possible to get the well to react to playful interaction, drawing, movement as well as to voice and acoustic instruments. It can also be used for other forms of entertainment, as well as different artistic or education purposes. The musical device is made up of 30 finely tuned chromatic metallophone steel tone sheets. The sheet tones are made of 10 mm thick aluminium alloys arranged in a 12-segment 2.5 rotation spiral; the base tones are enhanced by resonator pipes.
