Come and see the greenest town in Hungary, the southwest gate to the country, the heart of the Mura region as well as a modern, dynamically developing urban centre.

Its beautiful natural environment, evoking the beauty of Tuscany, is as attractive to tourists as its exciting history and heritage emitting an elegant but convivial atmosphere. Although its mediaeval castle had been dismantled by Emperor Leopold, its bricks were reused and continue to live on in other buildings and in the town’s 300-year-old Franciscan church. Nagykanizsa’s current image and identity rely heavily on this heritage, with a focus on the values established by the emerging middle class at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. This tendency brought about significant progress in the field of industry, trading and culture and making Nagykanizsa the commercial and cultural centre of the Mura region.

The town’s streets emanating a special historic atmosphere and its triangle-shaped leafy squares and parks are the imprints of a rich heritage. This legacy can also be captured in the broad range of programmes offered all year round for all age groups. One basic pillar in Nagykanizsa’s local identity is the downtown area built in a historical-eclectic style in the 19th century with a large number of elegant residential buildings, uniquely designed triangular squares among them the Elizabeth Square (Erzsébet tér) renovated a decade ago. Traditions rooted in Kanizsa’s role as a town of fairs, of military activities, and a cultural, educational centre also shaped the town’s overall image. The boating lake with the adjacent leisure centre, located in close vicinity of the town, are also major tourist attractions. Nagykanizsa keeps progressing at a fast pace as attested to by new projects including a biking centre, a cycle path, a playground, and one of Hungary’s tallest lookout towers.
