Veszprém is famous for its narrow streets, atmospheric little squares, leafy parks, and its mediaeval ruins – features that contribute to the town’s overall romantic ambience. Legend has it that Hungary’s Reigning Prince Géza, as well as his son Stephen, and his wife Gisela were very much fond of the town. They established a bishopric here and provided support for building of the St Michael Cathedral and the nunnery at Veszprémvölgy. It was the latter where the mantle, claimed to have become the Hungarian kings’ coronation garment, was embroidered here, most likely earning the bishop of Veszprém the privilege of crowning Hungary’s queens – hence the name “the city of queens”.
Today the community is regarded as the engine of the region in terms of economy, religion, tourism, culture and education. Veszprém is also hailed as a university town, the Pannon University is an important R&D and knowledge centre of the whole region. The city of queens, at the same time, is also a cultural centre with its various festivals such as the VeszprémFest, the Street Music Festival or the Auer Festival.
Veszprém offers a broad range of cultural programmes with its collections of fine arts, religion and local history, and its Zoo makes it an even more popular destination. The town’s choirs, dance troupes, bands and ensembles offer high-standard entertainment all throughout the year, while sports play an equally significant role here. Telekom Veszprém’s men handball team does not only attract local fans; its top ranking among the international handball teams also brings foreign tourists to the town.
Owing to its location at the meeting point of the Bakony range and Lake Balaton, Veszprém can serve as an engine that keeps powering the development of the region.
