Júlia Szendrey was an excellent writer and translator but her name went down in history as Sándor Petőfi’s muse, who inspired the writer of some of the most beautiful love poems. The memorial is located between Route 71 and the Fenéki Road, leading to Keszthely, on the Szendrey estate. The curator of the exhibition was Dr. Rita Ratzky, chief councillor of the Petőfi Literary Museum. The memorial book, dedicated to the memory of Júlia Szendrey, was published in 2012 by the Georgikon Faculty of the Pannon University with the support of the Georgikon Foundation.

Júlia Szendrey’s father, Ignác Szendrey worked as a superintendent on the Festetics estate in Keszthely. The family lived in the new part of the estate (Újmajor), a district of Keszthely, referred to as the Szendrey estate since 1973. It was the town of Keszthely that first erected a statue to pay tribute to Júlia Szendrey, and an elementary school named after her still operates here so this town does deserve to have a memorial room dedicated to Júlia Szendrey. The first buildings on the Szendrey estates were erected at the end of the 18th century; the house where Júlia Szendrey was born has had a commemorative plaque on it since 1923. The first public statue depicting Júlia Szendrey was inaugurated in Keszthely in May 2009. The superintendent’s house is right adjacent to the memorial room; a plaque on its wall states that Béla Bartók was accommodated in this building once.
